529 wooden pieces / 470x330x5mm (approx. 18.5x13x0.25")

The renowned cartographer, Jodocus Hondius, was born 1563 in Wakken (West Flanders). He became a globe maker and map engraver and In 1593 he set up his business in Amsterdam. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer and Speed.

Henricus Hondius, the mapmaker, was the son of Joducus, whose portrait is featured in the bottom left corner. The map also includes portraits of Gerardus Mercator, Claudius Ptolemy, and Julius Caesar.

This map exemplifies the baroque-style Dutch cartography with its elaborate cartouches and whimsical illustrations. Mythical scenes and fantastical creatures adorn the borders, while the map itself showcases charming depictions of sailing vessels and sea monsters, enhancing its visual appeal. Orbis Geographica was the first world map displayed in an atlas that became widely available.

In addition to its numerous captivating illustrations and detailed map elements, this map highlights several notable geographic features. These include the portrayal of California as an island, the intricate river networks and lakes of North America and the first delineation of the Australian coastline depicted in a map.
