Assam Mangalam FTGFOP1 The perfect Assam breakfast tea from the renowned Mangalam Estate. Rich, malty and spicy-flavoured tea. Encouraged by extraordinarily good production results on the tea plantation Manjushree, in 1973 the owners decided to found a further tea garden: the Mangalam Tea Estate. By following the concept of a very dense planting with selected Assamica hybrids, they produce remarkably good CTC and orthodox qualities. Our Assam Mangalam is a carefully processed tea with large leaves and lots of golden tips. The colour is dark amber. An absolute highlight in every Assam assortment. Absolutely gorgeous! It's what we drink in the mornings. One of our best selling teas. A particularly fine example of gunpowder green tea. Each leaf has been rolled into a small round bundle. Rolling the tea renders it less susceptible to physical damage and allows the tea to retain more of the flavour and aroma. This is a superior version of Gunpowder known as Zucha or Pearl Tea. The tea is dried in rolling drums and the constant rotation gives the tea its spherical form. It has a greenish dry golden liquor much appreciated throughout the Middle East with a light smoke and nutty character. Please note: In order to become more environmentally-friendly we no longer add large coloured labels to our tea packets. Arguably one of the best cups of Kenyan black tea around. The leaves yield a delicious amber-coloured brew with hints of malt and berry. The finish is gentle and astringent with notes of malt, currant and moist earth. Nicely twisted and rolled leaves with golden tips shows that care was taken in making this fine tea. Interestingly the story of Kosabei Estate tea begins in Assam far up in the Himalayan foothills. During the 19th century, long before tea was ever plated in Kenya (rumoured to have been in 1903) British planters had been clearing jungle and producing teas for the London auction up in Assam. The early planters lived in extreme isolation often weeks upriver from the nearest town. Subsequently they had a lot of time on their hands. What time they did not devote to hanging about the local club playing backgammon was spent experimenting with new ways to manufacture finished tea. At the time most of the world's teas were produced in China (a country known for keeping a tight lid on production secrets). Initially the early Assam planters attempted to mimic the better-known Chinese tea grades - i.e. Assam Hyson Assam Congou etc. Over the years as the result of all their experimentation the Assam planters developed many new grades and styles of finished leaf, leading to the classification system we know today - OP FBOP GBOP TGFOP etc. Now where does the Kenyan connection come into play? One of Assam's early planters was a man by the name of George Williamson. Williamson's excellent business acumen and knack for growing and manufacturing exceptional teas soon caught the attention of the London auction houses and his company grew into one of the largest and best-run private tea companies in the world. During their many years growing tea in Assam George Williamson's perfected the art of the tea world's finer grades among them TGFOP - Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. During the early part of the new millennium George Williamson's moved their business from Assam to Kenya bringing their tea expertise with them and ushering in a new era of Kenyan production. Until the arrival of Williamson's in Kenya most Kenyan teas produced for the export market were CTC production, the result of which was that Kenya's industry came of age during the 20th century - a decidedly more mechanised age than the 19th. Recognising the exceptional quality of seasonal Kenyan leaf Williamson's decided to experiment with some of the more traditional leaf styles they had manufactured back in Assam. The result is some of the finest, most flavourful teas to be found anywhere. Please note: In order to become more environmentally-friendly we no longer add large coloured labels to our tea packets. Assam Hunwal 2nd flush TGFOP1 Rich, full-bodied black Assam tea with a colourful orange-red liquor. The Hunwal estate is located in Jorhat, State of Assam, south of the river Brahmaputra. The high altitude of up to 1000m above sea-level, which is untypical of Assam, and the resulting cooler temperatures guarantee very rich and strong qualities due to the slow growth of the plants. This well-processed tea is from the second plucking period. Hunwal's Breakfast Reserve is already a firm favourite on our list so we couldn't resist their TGFOP1 offering. Malty, full-bodied character with bright flavoury notes and hints of cask oakiness. This tea is like a proper Highlander: robust, malty (not unlike a good Scotch) and full of flavour. Highlanders liked their tea very strong and insisted on hints of cask oak to remind them of their clan's own special elixir - single malt Scotch. This blend consists of 2nd flush Assam tea (thick and robust with delicious hints of malt), January production South Indian tea (high mountain-grown that has wonderful flavour notes which accentuate the robust Assam), Keemun Panda #1 which has a delicious winy character further enhancing the stout malty character of the blend and finally a Chingwo County Orange Pekoe which gives the distinct oaky character. This tea is especially delicious with milk, which enhances the malty character of the tea and highlights the brightness of the cup. Powerful fragrance and balanced aroma. This special smoked tea has a distinctive flavour sometimes referred to as 'tarry' and is a special tea from Fujian province. The Fukienese word 'souchong' means 'sub variety', that is, a sub variety of other black teas from the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian. When Lapsang Souchong was first exported to western European countries and became famous on the international markets it was no doubt due to the distinct aroma and flavour. Interestingly the best Lapsang is produced in the nature preserve located in the Wuyi Mountains, where the high mountains with thick pine forests and heavy mist provide the ideal environment for growing top quality tea. A top quality robust blend of Spring Kenyan teas with 2nd Flush Assams create a luxury "Irish Breakfast Tea" Taste the difference! In order to provide the Irish with blends this strong, tea blenders supplying the market buy up top quality seasonal output from Assam and Kenya. The Assam teas are picked from the top production of the Second Flush (a period of high growth in the month of June) The Kenyan teas selected are usually those produced in either February or August when the most flavourful seasonal quality leaf is grown. The Assam component of this Irish blend gives the cup a strong, deep malty character with heavy layers of astringency that dry the mouth, feeling almost as if you could chew the tea. (This is similar to the way a very dry wine can make you pucker.) The Kenyan teas provide a bright coppery colour with profound floral notes that add a complex depth to the cup. An exquisite tea with strong flavoured floral notes. A great afternoon tea. Drink it on its own or with friends. Named after the wonderful Rose Garden in London's Regents Park. June is rose month - but this lovely tea is perfect for sipping any time of year. In fact for those of us who live in colder climes winter might be more apropos. The reason? This tea has the ability to make any room burst with the aromas of the arrival of spring. Rose tea however is not a new arrival to the world of tea. In China they have been drinking rose scented tea for millennia. In Britain rose tea has been a staple of garden parties since the days of Queen Victoria.
